South Africa's supreme court of appeal has convicted Oscar Pistorius of murder, overturning an earlier verdict of culpable homicide or manslaughter.
The Olympic athlete will now have to return to the court for re-sentencing.
The 29-year-old killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after shooting her a number of times through a toilet door in his home early on Valentine's Day 2013. Prosecutors said Pistorius shot Steenkamp during an argument, while the defense said he killed her by mistake, thinking she was an intruder.
Steenkamp's mother, June, made no immediate comment after the judge read the lengthy decision Thursday morning.
Pistorius has been under house arrest at his uncle's mansion in Pretoria. He served one year of his five-year sentence in prison.
