Total Nigeria Plc has expressed its determination to empower young entrepreneurs in Nigeria through its contest ‘Startupper of the Year by Total’.

The oil firm said that the contest was initiated in Nigeria and 33 other African countries, to identify, reward and provide support to the best business creations and development projects that are not more than two years of existence.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, the Managing Director, Total Nigeria Plc, Mr. Alex Vovk, said the contest was aimed at supporting young Nigerian entrepreneurs below the age of 35, through financial support, customised coaching, as well as an impactful and rewarding label.

Vovk said that the company had realised that young entrepreneurs were not interested in financial support, but empowerment and visibility.

He added that the process, which kicked off this month, would begin with the opening of the online platform, where talents would present their ideas and the winning projects awarded the tag: ‘Startupper of the year 2016 by Total’

“The Africa startupper challenge project is clearly part of the mission to engage better, safer, cleaner, more efficient, more innovative and accessible energy to the many that reached. The challenge is part of Total’s global initiative of supporting the socioeconomics development of all the countries where it operates worldwide. It is a very concrete action launched to locally contribute to the reinforcement of the industrial fabric and employment on the Africa continent, by supporting the most daring and innovative entrepreneurs in realising their project. This approach targets the emergence of new initiatives, while respecting the company’s values. A jury of professionals will pre-select up to ten of the best submitted projects in Nigeria based on specific criteria which include innovation, originality, audacity and potential to impact on the socio-economic development of the Nigeria society and its people,” he explained.

He further explained that as part of efforts to prepare a sustainable energy future in Africa, the company is implementing ambitious exploration programmes and continuous efforts to increase oil fields reserves in production.

“For the Total Upstream, innovating to mobilise new resources and transmitting our knowledge to the younger generations are our priorities to discovering and developing the unique potentials of Nigeria and Nigerians. Besides, the group is the first marketer of petroleum products on the continent, and this is also the case in Nigeria where Total Nigeria is the market leader and company of reference.”
